Linear Welding & Fabrication: The Encino Owner's Guide

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear makes a lot of gate operators, but the welding and fabrication failures we see cluster around a few model lines. The APeX series, the LRA and LRA-DC swing operators, and the older Linear LD series all use similar mounting brackets and hinge assemblies. The good news: most brackets are interchangeable within a series, but not across all series. A hinge mount from an LRA will not bolt onto an APeX without modification, and sometimes not even then.

How to identify what you have: look for the model label on the operator itself, usually on the underside of the cover or on the chassis plate. If the label is gone, measure the bolt spacing on the bracket. Linear uses 4-inch and 5-inch bolt patterns on most residential swing operators. That measurement alone rules out half the wrong parts before we even show up.

OEM versus aftermarket matters here. Linear OEM brackets are good steel but they’re not magical. For mild steel brackets and gate hinges, a quality aftermarket equivalent from a local fabricator often outlasts the original, especially when we add a reinforcement gusset at the stress point. For anything involving the operator’s internal limit switches or motor mount, stay with OEM. Aftermarket motor mounts rarely line up correctly and the vibration tears them apart within a year.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate leaf sags visibly when closed. This usually means the hinge post has shifted or the hinge itself has a crack forming at the weld line. A sagging gate is not a cosmetic problem; it is metal telling you it’s tired.
• You hear a grinding or groaning sound near the hinge when the gate moves. That sound is metal on metal, often a cracked weld that flexes with every cycle. The longer it runs, the bigger the crack gets.
• The operator bracket has visible rust staining or a hairline crack. Linear brackets are exposed to the weather, and Encino’s morning marine layer plus afternoon heat cycles will find any weak point. Surface rust is fixable; a crack is not.
• The gate slams or bounces at the end of travel instead of stopping smoothly. When a weld fails or a bracket loosens, the gate’s geometry changes. The operator is set to travel a specific distance, and now it’s hitting the limit too early or too late.
• You can move the gate leaf by hand with more play than you used to. Grab the gate and push it side to side. If there’s wobble at the hinge, the pin or the weld is worn. That wobble will take out the operator next.

Replacement Cost & What's Included

A broken hinge post that requires cutting out the old steel and fabricating a new mount plate: that’s the upper end, sometimes a bit more if we’re also re-aligning the gate leaf.

DIY or Call Us?

Welding on your own Linear gate is not like changing a light bulb. If the part involves a tensioned spring assembly, a loaded gate hinge, or the operator’s internal drive mechanism, leave it alone. A gate under tension can release suddenly, and you do not want your hand in the path of that. Even a simple hinge pin removal on a heavy gate can go wrong if the leaf shifts while you’re underneath it.

What you can safely check: the model number, the bolt spacing on the bracket, and whether the crack is through the metal or just surface rust. Take photos, measure the bolt pattern, and note which way the gate swings. That information alone tells us whether we can fix it in one trip or need to fabricate a part first.
