DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here, and I’ll be straight about where it starts and stops. Checking for visible cracks, testing the gate for side-to-side sway, and taking photos of the failure before you call us - all good, do that. What you should absolutely not do is fire up a flux-core welder from the hardware store and try to lay a bead on a loaded hinge. That hinge is carrying several hundred pounds of gate, the post is under constant tension, and a cold or shallow weld from an underpowered machine will look fine for about three weeks and then snap, usually while someone is walking under it. Beyond the safety of it, a bad weld often ruins the surrounding steel with burn-through and makes the eventual professional repair more involved. We’ve had to cut out plenty of homeowner welds to get back to good metal, and it doubles the labor every time.
