BFT Gate Installation in Encino: What to Know First

BFT gate installation in Encino runs between $1,200 and $4,800 depending on whether we’re setting a new gate with a BFT motor or replacing an operator that’s stopped cooperating. We’re an independent BFT service provider, not a factory shop, which means we decide with you whether a part deserves replacement or can be welded and tuned right here in your driveway. Most BFT installations take a day, sometimes two if we’re pouring new post footings or running fresh conduit under a walkway.

This page is for the Encino homeowner who already owns a BFT operator or is considering one, and wants somebody who actually knows how these Italian-made boards and arms behave in Southern California heat. If your BFT gate is giving you trouble or you’re ready to get one installed, call (350) 247-4763 and you’ll get a person, not a recording.

How BFT Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

BFT has been building gate operators since the 1980s, and their hydraulic and electromechanical swing arms show up on a lot of Encino driveways, especially the older Deimos and Phobos swing lines and the newer Ultra and Maxima lines. But every brand has its weak points. Here’s what we see most:

  • BFT Deimos hydraulic arm seeps at the piston seal. Older Deimos swing arms from the mid-2000s were built like tanks, but after 12 to 15 years of direct Encino sun on a west-facing driveway, the piston seal hardens and weeps fluid. The arm gets sluggish, then stops holding the gate open. We replace the seal kit and refill with the correct BFT hydraulic oil, and the arm usually has another decade in it. No need to swap the whole unit unless the cylinder bore is scored, which does happen when owners run them dry.

  • BFT Thalia control board loses its capacitor. On Thalia and Thalia Light operators, the capacitor is what gives the motor its starting punch. In Encino’s hot summers, capacitors degrade faster than the rest of the board. The symptom: the gate hums but doesn’t move, or intermittently trips and resets. We keep replacement capacitors on the truck and test the board before condemning it. A $40 capacitor beats an $800 board swap every time, and BFT doesn’t exactly discourage board replacement, because that’s their margin.
  • BFT Ultra limit switches drift out of adjustment. The Ultra line uses magnetic limit switches, and they’re sensitive. If a landscaper bumps the gate or a car taps it, the limits shift, and suddenly the gate stops two feet short or over-travels into the fence. Recalibrating is straightforward and takes us about twenty minutes with the BFT programmer. The factory instructions are fine, but the real trick is knowing which parameter resets to factory default and which one keeps the custom run time you paid to set up.
  • BFT Maxima photocell wiring is fragile at the connector. The Maxima series safety photocells use a small three-pin connector that corrodes in coastal-adjacent and sprinkler-heavy yards. Your gate reverses for no reason or refuses to close at all. We cut the connector, solder and heat-shrink the joints, and seal them against moisture. BFT’s sanctioned fix is replacement photocells; we fix the wiring path and put the $190 per pair back in your pocket.

That list doesn’t even get into aftermarket remotes that don’t match the BFT rolling code, or clone boards from overseas sellers that fry the transformer the first time the gate cycles under load. We’ve pulled more than one melted clone board out of an otherwise healthy BFT housing.

Our BFT Gate Installation Process

Every BFT gate installation in Encino follows the same sequence. We don’t do surprises, and we don’t do shortcuts that look fine for six months.

  1. 1
We come out and look at the gate, the driveway, and how you use it. Swinging, sliding, double gate, pedestrian, whatever. The gate tells us the story. A hinge post that moved tells us one thing; a motor that was undersized from the start tells us another.
  2. 2
We give you a written price and the reasoning behind it. You know the number before we touch a tool. If the existing BFT arm can be rebuilt and reused, we tell you. If it needs to go, we show you why. You decide with facts in front of you.
  3. 3
We prep the site properly. That means checking post depth and concrete condition, running conduit the right way, and confirming the electrical supply matches what the BFT board actually needs. An undersized circuit is the leading cause of operator failure on installs done by electricians who don’t do gates every week.
  4. 4
We mount, wire, and program the BFT operator. Setting the limits, setting the force parameters, syncing your remotes and keypad, making sure the safety edges and photocells actually function. We test it under real use, not just in the open position. We lean on the gate, we block it, we kill power and restart it.
  5. 5
We walk you through how it works and hand you the paperwork. Including the 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing. If something’s not right, one call brings us back. No dispatch queue, no “that’s not covered.” Just us, fixing it.

What BFT Gate Installation Costs in Encino

Here’s the straight answer, because “call for pricing” is the most useless sentence in any trade.

  • BFT operator on an existing, working gate: $1,200 to $2,200 depending on the model and whether conduit already exists.
  • New gate plus BFT operator: $2,800 to $4,800 depending on gate size and post work. A 16-foot double swing gate with new steel posts costs more than a single pedestrian gate on existing posts.
  • BFT board replacement or seal rebuild: $350 to $800. If we can rebuild instead of replace, the number drops, and we’ll tell you that up front.

What moves the price: post condition, distance from the electrical panel to the gate, gate weight, and whether we’re working with existing wiring or burying new conduit under your driveway. Prices are quoted and agreed before any work starts. Call (350) 247-4763 for an exact quote, estimates are free.

Why Encino Homeowners Call Gatewood Fence & Gate for BFT Work

Hal Gatewood has been fixing gates in the San Fernando Valley since 2001, and most of that time has been spent right here in Encino. He grew up two blocks from Balboa Park and never really saw a reason to leave. That matters when you call at 7 PM on a Tuesday and the person who answers is the same person who’ll drive over and look at your gate.

We also work on the other brands you might have: LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, DoorKing. So if your BFT arm is done and a different brand makes more sense for your setup, we’ll tell you straight. Every job carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. Calls are answered by a live person, 24/7. And there’s no trip charge inside the county. Just call me - if I can’t fix it, I’ll tell you straight and we’ll figure out what makes sense.
