BFT Access Control Installation: The Encino Owner’s Guide

BFT access control installation in Encino typically runs $450-$900 installed, including the new keypad, card reader, or telephone entry unit, programming, and a full system test. We stock BFT-compatible access control parts on the truck, so in most cases we can swap a failed unit the same day we show up. The way most Encino homeowners discover the problem is simple: the keypad stops accepting the code, the intercom goes silent, or the gate starts cycling open and closed on its own. That last one is the one that gets people on the phone fastest, and for good reason: a gate that opens by itself is a gate that has stopped being a gate.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT. That said, we’ve been working on BFT operators and access systems here in the Valley since 2001, and Hal Gatewood knows which parts fail first and why, which is more than any parts catalog will tell you.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has been making gate operators and access control systems since 1981, and their product line splits into a few families that matter when you’re matching parts. The older Rigel and Phobos series are still common on Encino gates installed in the 1990s and 2000s. The newer Deimos, Icaro, and Moovi lines show up on more recent installs, and they use different communication protocols for the access modules. This is the first compatibility gotcha: a BFT keypad from a 2008 Phobos system will not talk to a 2018 Deimos board, even if the connector looks the same. The board inside changed.

How to identify what you have before you call: open the operator cover and look for the silver data plate. It will list the model number and production year. On the access control side, BFT part numbers follow a pattern like B EBA (keypads), B RBA (card readers), and B CTA (telephone entry), followed by a three- or four-digit variant code. Photograph that plate with your phone and text it to us, or just read it over the phone. For OEM versus aftermarket: BFT’s proprietary boards are not something we’d recommend crossing to a knockoff. On the physical keypad housing and mounting hardware, a quality aftermarket equivalent is fine. The board itself, the part that fails, you want BFT OEM. Hal has seen enough cheap aftermarket boards fail within a year to stop recommending them entirely.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • The keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. Usually this is the relay on the access board failing, not the operator motor. The board sends the signal, but the contacts wear out and the signal never arrives. We test this by jumping the open terminals directly.
  • The gate opens or closes without anyone pressing anything. Nearly always a shorted wire or a water-damaged board making intermittent contact. In Encino’s wet winters, we see this most often at properties near the Sepulveda Basin where drainage runs close to the gate post.
  • The intercom rings but the voice is garbled or one-way. This points to the audio amplifier on the entry panel, or corrosion on the phone line terminals if it’s a wired unit. It’s rarely the handset inside the house.
  • The keypad backlight flickers or keys need to be pressed hard. The membrane on the keypad face degrades, especially on west-facing gates off Ventura Boulevard where the afternoon sun bakes the plastic. The board underneath may still be fine.
  • Multiple codes stop working at once. Not a failed part, usually a power surge that wiped the board’s memory. The unit reverts to default programming and forgets every code it learned. We can reprogram, but we’ll also check the surge protection on the operator circuit so it doesn’t happen again.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For BFT access control installation in Encino, figure on $450-$900 installed. Here’s how that breaks down:

  • BFT keypad replacement: $450-$600, including the OEM board, housing, labor, and programming for up to 25 codes.
  • BFT card reader or proximity system: $500-$750, including reader, antenna if needed, and up to 10 cards or fobs.
  • BFT telephone entry or intercom system: $650-$900, depending on whether we’re pulling new wire or using the existing phone line.

The range comes down to how much wiring is still usable and whether the operator control board also needs attention. We quote the number before any work starts, and that number doesn’t change when the job is done. Every BFT access control install carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it doesn’t work right within 90 days, one call brings us back, no runaround. We also offer $40 off any repair over $200 and no trip charge inside the county. Seniors and veterans get a permanent 10% discount, applied without anyone having to ask twice.

DIY or Call Us?

If the keypad is dead, before you call, check the obvious: make sure the operator’s power switch hasn’t been tripped, and confirm the breaker for the gate circuit is on. That’s five minutes and zero risk. If the keypad lights up but the gate won’t move, or if it’s opening on its own, stop there. These systems carry low-voltage power and are generally safe to inspect, but the moment you open the operator cover and start prodding at a board with the line voltage still connected, the risk changes. BFT operator capacitors can hold a charge even with power cut. We’re not saying this to be dramatic: a charged capacitor can knock you flat. Let someone who has been doing this for 24 years handle it. Call (350) 247-4763 and you’ll get a live person, any hour.
