Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Encino Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Linear-compatible keypads, intercoms, and receivers across Encino, with most keypad swaps running $180 to $320 installed and intercom repairs typically landing between $240 and $420 depending on the model and what actually failed. Most Linear keypad and intercom problems we see in Encino come down to three things: dead batteries, corroded contacts from our dry heat plus morning marine layer, or a receiver that’s lost its programming. The way it usually goes: the keypad works fine for months or even years, then one morning it won’t open the gate, or the intercom starts buzzing instead of talking.

The good news is that most failed Linear keypads don’t need a whole new system. In the majority of cases, we can replace the failed component or re-flash the programming and you’re back up the same day we arrive. Hal Gatewood has been fixing gate systems in the San Fernando Valley since 2001, and he grew up two blocks from Balboa Park, so when he says he knows how Encino weather treats outdoor electronics, he means it.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear keypads have been around for decades, and the model numbers matter because the wiring and mounting footprint changed over time. The most common units we service in Encino are the standard Linear AK-11 keypad, the flush-mount and surface-mount AE-100 and AE-500 telephone entry systems, and the older multi-button AP-4 and AP-5 models that still work fine when they’re maintained. The newer Linear keypads use a narrow rectangular footprint with a two-wire connection, while the older square-faced models need four-wire hookup to the gate operator’s control board.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: the model number on the faceplate label doesn’t always match the revision inside. We pull the cover and check the board’s firmware and terminal layout before ordering or stocking a replacement part, because two Linear keypads that look identical to the owner can have different connectors at the gate operator end. OEM parts are easier to match and carry Linear’s own warranty, but for discontinued models we sometimes use quality aftermarket equivalents from established electronics suppliers, not the cheapest listings online. When the part genuinely costs less and works just as well, we’ll tell you that. When OEM is the only smart way to go, we’ll tell you that too. We also stock and service keypads and intercoms from LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls for when a customer has a mixed setup.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keypad lights up but the gate won’t open. This usually means the receiver’s rolling code lost sync or the relay inside the gate operator’s control board is wearing out. Sometimes it’s as simple as a programming reset; sometimes the receiver needs replacing.
  • The keypad needs to be pressed three or four times before it registers. That’s a sign of worn button contacts or moisture intrusion behind the faceplate. In Encino we see this most often on keypads that face west and get full afternoon sun every day, which bakes the silicone membrane until it loses its spring.
  • The intercom buzzes loudly instead of transmitting voice. A constant buzz usually points to a failed speaker or a corroded wiring connection at the pedestal. The fix is often a replacement speaker and new weatherproof butt connectors, not a whole new intercom.
  • The code works for a week, then randomly stops working. This one is almost always the receiver losing power intermittently or picking up radio interference from a nearby device. We trace the wiring and swap the receiver relay if needed.
  • Numbers are faded and you can’t tell which button is which. Sun damage on the faceplate. The keypad still works, but you can’t read it, and that becomes a real problem when a delivery person or a guest is standing at the gate trying to figure out which number is a 1 and which is a 7.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Encino, a Linear keypad replacement runs about $180 to $320 installed, and an intercom repair lands between $240 and $420. The range comes down to whether we’re swapping the entire keypad and faceplate, replacing only the receiver board, or repairing the wiring back to the operator. We write the price on paper before any work starts: parts cost, labor, and the total.

What’s in that number: the new Linear-compatible part, removal of the old one, rewiring and weatherproofing with the right connectors, re-programming your existing codes or setting new ones, and testing the gate through at least five open-and-close cycles before we pack up. You won’t find a separate fee for “programming” or “code setup” on our invoice either. The whole repair carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, and if something isn’t right, one call brings Hal back out, no runaround.

DIY or Call Us?

If the keypad is flickering, the first check is the battery, and any owner in Encino can safely swap that out. If the faceplate is cracked or the buttons are sticking, a new keypad face is also something a careful homeowner can install with a screwdriver. Where DIY goes wrong is when the gate still won’t respond after a new battery, or the intercom is making noise but no voice comes through. That’s when the problem is upstream in the receiver board or the operator’s control wiring.

These systems are low-voltage, so the electrical risk isn’t what people imagine, but the gate itself can still move unexpectedly while the keypad is disconnected if the operator is in a fault state. If you’re not completely comfortable with the wiring or you’ve already replaced the keypad once and it didn’t help, call us at (350) 247-4763 and we’ll be straight about what needs doing. We answer live 24/7, and we’ll tell you the likely fix before we even schedule the visit.
