Why Encino Homeowners Choose Mighty Mule Gate Repair

We provide independent Mighty Mule repair in Encino, from the flat-lot ranch homes south of Ventura Boulevard to the gated estates climbing into Encino Hills. Our trucks carry OEM Mighty Mule control boards, arms, and remotes for the MM260, MM371W, and MM571W lines, so most repairs happen in one trip, not two weeks of waiting on mail-order parts. We’re not authorized by Mighty Mule and we don’t pretend to be, which means we fix what’s actually broken instead of swapping parts on a factory script.

Mighty Mule has been the go-to DIY-friendly opener for Encino homeowners for years, and that’s exactly why we stay busy. A lot of these units got installed by a handyman or the homeowner themselves, and they work fine until the first Santa Ana season or a summer where the Valley bowl pushes past 105 degrees. Then the boards start acting up, the gears strip, the limits wander. That’s where we come in. Hal Gatewood has been fixing Mighty Mule gates in Encino since 2001, and our shop is right down the road. Call us at (350) 247-4763 and a live person answers, day or night.

Why Trust Gatewood Fence & Gate for Your Mighty Mule Gate Repair?

Hal Gatewood built this company the slow way, one referral at a time, and most of those referrals come from Encino neighbors who watched a cut-rate installer’s work fall apart six months after the check cleared. He grew up two blocks from Balboa Park and picked up welding and fabrication at Los Angeles Pierce College over in Woodland Hills, so when he looks at a Mighty Mule arm that’s sagging on its bracket, he’s not guessing. We also offer Mighty Mule service in Los Angeles. He’s measuring.

We work on Mighty Mule equipment almost daily. That’s not a corporate talking point, it’s just what the service board looks like in the San Fernando Valley. From the original MM260 to the MM571W and the FM200 solar units, we know these openers the way a mechanic knows a particular engine. We know which plastic gears strip under wind load, which boards cook in an Encino summer, and which limit switches drift when a gate fights a hillside grade every single cycle. When you call us about a Mighty Mule problem, you’re talking to someone who has probably fixed that exact problem in Encino this month.

Every job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s not right, Hal comes back. No runaround, no “that’s not covered.” His name is on the shop and on every invoice.

Common Mighty Mule Gate Repair Problems We Fix in Encino

  • Control board failure from power surges or water intrusion. The older MM260 units especially, when they were mounted without surge protection, take a hit from a lightning storm or a transformer spike and the board just gives up. The gate beeps three times and does nothing. We see this all over Encino, and we keep OEM MM260 boards on the truck so we’re not waiting on a distributor. The fix is usually a board replacement plus a surge suppressor so it doesn’t happen again next storm season.
  • Stripped plastic drive gears in the MM371W and MM372W arm assemblies. These units use plastic gears inside the arm, and on a long, heavy gate that catches wind, those gears take a beating. Santa Ana winds funnel through the Valley and rack swing gates hard, and after a few seasons the gears strip and the arm whines but won’t move the gate. We replace the gear set with quality aftermarket gears when the unit is out of warranty, and we check the gate’s hinge alignment so the new gears aren’t fighting the same problem.
  • Limit switch misalignment on the MM571W. This is the one where the gate stops a foot short of full open, or slams hard at the end of travel. The limit switch nut backs off the shaft over time, especially on gates that get pushed around by wind. We reset the limits, thread-lock the nut, and verify the auto-reverse sensitivity. On Encino hillside gates, we also check that the force limits account for the grade, because an operator fighting gravity on every open cycle will drift out of adjustment faster than one on flat ground.
  • Receiver lockout or keypad failure after rain or lightning. The gate opens fine from the remote but the keypad does nothing, or the whole receiver stops responding after a storm. This is almost always water getting into the keypad housing or a surge hitting the receiver board when no inline surge suppressor was installed. We replace the keypad or receiver, seal the housing properly, and add surge protection at the keypad and board. In Encino, where summer monsoon cells can dump rain fast and lightning follows the Valley’s thermal updrafts, this is a regular call.
  • Battery backup and solar panel issues on the FM200 and FM350 series. The FM200 solar units depend on a battery that’s charged by the panel, and in Encino’s deep-valley heat, batteries cook faster than the manufacturer rates for. We also see undersized solar panels that can’t keep up with a gate that cycles a lot, or panels mounted where afternoon shade from a neighbor’s oak tree kills the charge. We test the battery under load, verify panel output, and replace what’s actually dead, not the whole system.

Mighty Mule Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

We stock OEM Mighty Mule control boards, arms, and remotes for the MM260, MM371W, and MM571W lines, and we keep common gear sets, capacitors, and limit switch hardware on the truck. When the OEM part is discontinued or the gate is out of warranty, we’ll use a quality aftermarket part if it’s genuinely as good or better. We’ll tell you which is which, and we’ll tell you what each one costs before we turn a wrench. You’ll know the price before any work starts, and that price is the price.

If a gearbox or arm has failed more than twice, we show the owner the numbers. A second rebuild on a tired MM371W arm might cost close to what a new MM571W head unit runs, and at that point the math speaks for itself. We don’t upsell replacements because we make more on them. We show you the invoice and let you decide. If we can fix the unit in your driveway and it’ll hold up, that’s what we recommend. Hal would rather weld and rebuild than haul your gate off to a shop.

On-site welding means the gate stays in your driveway. We fix panels, brackets, hinge posts, and operator mounts without loading anything onto a trailer. Need a Mighty Mule board or a new arm? Call (350) 247-4763 and we’ll tell you straight what it’ll take.

Our Mighty Mule Service Process - Step by Step

  1. 1
Diagnosis. We test the board, the arm or actuator, the limit switches, the receiver, the battery, and the gate itself. A Mighty Mule opener usually fails for a reason, and half the time that reason is the gate, not the opener. A hinge post that’s shifted an eighth of an inch puts the whole system out of square, and the opener pays for it. We find the real cause, not just the symptom.
  2. 2
Repair or replacement. We replace the failed Mighty Mule part with OEM or a quality aftermarket equivalent, reset limits and force settings, and align the gate so the operator isn’t fighting the installation. If welding is needed, we do it on site. You get the invoice before the work, and the price doesn’t change at the door.
  3. 3
Testing. We cycle the gate repeatedly, check auto-reverse sensitivity with an obstruction test, verify remotes and keypads, and run the gate through its full travel a dozen times or more. On hillside Encino properties, we pay extra attention to how the operator handles the grade and whether the gate drifts after stopping.
  4. 4
Warranty. Every job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something isn’t right, one call brings us back. No fine print, no “up to” language. Just Hal’s name on the work.
